Hi there! It's so great to meet you!
I opened Piper's Place Dog Training, LLC in 2020 after spending a decade gaining experience and learning about dog behavior. Before beginning my professional dog training journey, I started in the animal field as an animal shelter volunteer before getting my first job as a veterinary assistant. I quickly fell in love with my job, no surprise there since I've known I wanted to work with animals since I was a kid, and advanced to becoming a veterinary technician. My role as a veterinary technician taught me so much of what I know today. I worked with several incredible veterinarians, many of which became my mentors.
For a long time I thought my long term career would be as a vet tech until I was given the opportunity several years ago to jump into the world of dog training and behavior, and I fell in love. I consider myself a major dog nerd since I adore working with dogs and learning about the science behind behavior and training. While I truly enjoy working with dogs, one of the best parts about my job is that I get to work with YOU! Helping dog owners transform from anxious, frustrated, and ready to give up on their dog to confident, relaxed, and thrilled to live with their dog is what makes my "job" my passion. My goal is to help families and fellow dog lovers learn how to effectively communicate with their canine companions so they have healthy boundaries and a fulfilling, life-long relationship.
Helen's qualifications:
Certified as an AKC Evaluator since 2018
Membership with the International Association of Canine Professionals
Experience in dog handling, husbandry, first aid, puppy raising, obedience training and behavior rehabilitation
Continued education in the form of attendance to dog training seminars and studying to be qualified as a Certified Dog Trainer through the IACP
Meet Piper! This girl came into my life at the beginning of 2018, just after I said goodbye to my childhood dog, Dozier. She was listed on Craigslist as part of an accidental litter, so my grandma and I picked her up in a Walmart parking lot for $80. I often joke that she was the best $80 I've ever spent (it's true)! Piper is a mix of American Pit Bull Terrier, Bluetick Coonhound, Chow Chow, and a few other breeds - AKA mutt. She is full of fire, attitude, determination, and love for the people she's close to. Her favorite things are working for food, carrying your shoes to the door for you, digging where you don't want her to, and curling up on every warm blanket she can find.
Puppyhood with Piper was a challenge I was not prepared for. She tested every bit of knowledge and patience I had and gave me no choice but to think far outside the box. Even though she was a spitfire as a puppy, she's the most incredible dog and I couldn't be more grateful to have her as my right-hand girl. She teaches me something new every day. If you've attended Piper's Place training classes, chances are you have met Piper! She's my "demo dog" and joins me on a lot of my training lessons.
